Gray
7344 hab
This is the last major town along the river Saône in Franche-Comté before Burgundy. The large stone quays bear testament to the intense port activity that Gray developed throughout the centuries, amassing a fortune and consequently building wonderful residences of character. With its Hôtel de vie Renaissance, 15th century basilica, theatre and castle housing the Baron Martin Museum, the considérable architectural héritage has entitled Gray to be listed as a Heritage Town. The Baron Martin Museum of art and archaeology houses a few treasures, including a collection of pastels and drawings by P. P. Prud'hon, 17th century Dutch and Plemish paintings and 18th century paintings and sculptures (temporary exhibitions ail year long). The semi-circular vaults of the cellars are home to the local archaeology. The town, a rural holiday resort, gives visitors a wide choice of areas for relaxation (parcs and gardeurs), activities (tennis, crazy golf, a watersports centre opposite the campsite on the bancs of the river Saône with two heated pools and a 43 m waterslide...) and sporting activities typical of an average-sized town (canoeing, hiking, rowing, and so on). You are strongly advised to visit the town on foot, so that you can appreciate the unique atmosphere of its walks, gates and unusual places (Espéranto muséum, St-Pierre Fourier Tower-unique in France due to its size-analemnatic sundial...). You can moor your boat upstream or downstream from the dam. Water and electricity supply terminais are available at the Quai Mavia, near the shops. The castle at St-Loup les Gray and the abbey at Corneux can be reached by bike.
